You’re glad it’s not YOU who is stranded on the side of the road, but you don’t like seeing anyone else in that situation either, right?
What can you do to help?
If you see someone waiting by their ailing car and would like to see if there’s anything you can do for them, here are some suggestions:
- Stay safely in your car or parked alongside theirs (if there is no traffic) and ask through your window if they are waiting for a tow or having any kind of emergency where you should get help.
- If they need a tow truck and have not called for one, call the nearest towing company for them.
- Some stranded folks could use some company or support while they wait, as it can be stressful. For example, if it’s an upset parent with crying kids in the car, assess whether you can help the situation. If you have refreshments with you, perhaps you can offer something and chat until the truck arrives.
Always use your best judgment and remain safe. If there is any doubt at all, you can call non-emergency police or a tow truck company and keep moving on your way. Any effort on your part is the sign of a caring neighbor.
